QW #5

I think he is trying to say that if people in a marriage didn't try to control what the other person does, marriages would be a lot happier. I can see how this could have been taken the wrong way yet I can see how he is trying to say that husbands and wives must simply respect each other and not get in the way of how the other person wants to live their life. If a wife were to boss around a husband or vice versa it would not be a healthy relationship. Marriage is about understanding each other and allowing each other to be your own person, not being bossy. At the end he is making the point that if each spouse tried to be their best, the marriage would be at its best.

QW #4 Compare/contrast the movie to book

I think that all of these differences make a huge difference in the development of the plot because the background of Janie in the movie is not as deep. The grandma's attitude towards marriage is not explained because you are not given the rich and complicated background of Janie's family. This makes the marriage to an older gentleman kind of random vs. in the book it is very understandable that the grandma would want a bright future for Janie.

QW #3 Authentic Voice

Writing a book about a struggle of people that you have not been through is definitely difficult to do without offending some people. For example, the help is a lot different than battle royal because of the narrator. The help although negative, has a much more optimistic outlook on the black struggle while battle royal is a much more pessimistic outlook with little hope for the black struggle. The two books leave the reader with completely different feelings and it is because of the way they are written and who narrates it. Writing books must come from authenticity and the help is way less authentic than books such as battle royal and their eyes are watching god.

QW #2 The Help

I can definitely see how this article makes sense because although the help is a good book and was enjoyable to read, yet I can tell how it being not accurate will make it not a good book to portray the black struggle. It is almost impossible for an author to write something accurately and well if she/he has not been through these struggles. I can see how the article makes sense but also literature is literature and can be written by anyone with imagination.

QW #1 Peer Editing

Peer editing is important because it gives students a chance to see others works and perhaps use that as an example for their own work. This enables students to get better ideas of how to write and see other peoples work. Also, by grading other peoples you are able to see flaws that you might have made yourself that you can later go back and fix without having your teacher needing to say it to you and reflect it in your grade. It is important to do this and see how you can improve your writing by taking examples from other people.

QW #8 FRANK

This movie was very fast paced and I didn't like it very much. It was graphic and it felt a little too dramatic. The acting was very good but like I said, dramatic. I would give it 3 stars out of 5 just because it did do a good job of going from the book to the movie yet sometimes it took a little too much movie freedom. I did like how it was easy to follow and it tied the book together for me but it was still very hard to follow. It skipped over a lot of important things and spent too long on some things so I would to see more of certain parts

Do now QW #7

Fear is something that keeps up with the times. For example, now the fear is terrorism and gun violence whereas some years ago, these were not legitimate fears. Whatever is feared in the modern times, is what people tend to fear in movies. Now we have tons of movies with kidnappers and gun violence and that is what is scary to us now. Im not scared of monsters or much because I know that they don't exist, but some time ago, people still believed in a lot of mythical creatures that might have scared them. Now we seem to be afraid of scarier things that we have seen impacting people all over the world. The movie Gattaca was something that scared me too because it is close to a reality. We get scared when we think something could possibly become a reality and frankly, Frankenstein doesn't scare me much because of the fact that I know it will never come true.

Responsibility for Creation? QW #6

I believe that he is definitely responsible. It is hard to say he isn't as he created this monster by hand who is destroying lives. I think that he should definitely take responsibility for the masters actions as well as he was also the one to ignore him and not give him the love he thinks he deserves to be a normal functioning human. Creating artificial life is a slippery slope and if we are going to make it this something that can actually happen, someone will have to take responsibility if things begin to go south. As with anything, someone has to take responsibility and I believe that first hand the easiest person to blame is the one to make it.

Frankestein as a play? QW #5

I think it is very interesting to see this book being turned in to a play. It gives the watcher and the reader a different look into what Frankenstein is thinking and why he does what he does. It is a cool way to be able to understand and appreciate his feeling and longing of loneliness. Since I helped turned a novel in to a play, I can really appreciate how much work went in to the making of the play and it looks as though it deviates from the book quite a bit which probably ended up working for the author. I would love to see it!
I also love that they switch characters each night because it changes the acting and the perspective. From being in acting, you take on the character that you play and it would be so interesting to see how being the slave and then being the master would change how you treat the other character. I would love to be able to play a character like that.

Genes from 3 babies? QW #4

There are definitely rules that should be in place when it comes to genetically making babies but I think that no matter what, it should remain 2 parents. It takes 2 people to naturally make a baby because that is how it happens. We should not be messing with more than 2 parents because things could go really wrong. Plus how would one even deal with the problem of who has custody? It is such a slippery slope that would take so much to keep it in place I just do not think that it is possible to keep a childs life healthy when they have more than one parent that not only created them, but raised them. We need to stop messing with all of these supernatural powers that are out of our control because it is more than likely that it will go wrong.

QW Course evaluation

I think that the pacing has been really good. Unfortunately we have the last period of the day and it is very difficult to focus I find yet it has been paced very nicely. I do think that vocal quizzes are the last things on our minds and they are hard to keep up with.

The Perfect Baby? QW #2

If I were to design a perfect baby, I would make it athletic and smart. I don't really care about the aesthetic part of it so I would definitely just make it have a very good personality. If it were possible to genetically design a baby I would also want to make sure that they would not pass any genetics on that would cause cancer or any incurable disease. I am against this yet obviously if it were my child I would be a bit biased.

UN natural selection? QW #1

It is interesting to see that when we genetically modify animals we think its cool and that its a good idea, yet when we think about modifying humans it scares us. When it is used to fight disease it is definitely a good idea yet it scares me to think that people could get a hold of this and use it for evil on the human body.

I am against this because it will take a lot of failing before we get it right and those fails could mean failing for human life. Seeing those butterflies that the crisper didn't worked on scared me because thinking about it in terms of butterflies, it could be so much more dire in the case of humans.

Choosing what gender you want your baby to be is not the same as genetically changing a child. I understand wanting to choose that but call me old fashion but I believe that a surprise is interesting and fun. When we mess with so much, it could end up being something negative and not positive as intended.

Ethical? 3 gene baby?

I do not think it is ethical to make a baby out of different DNA. The world is made so that some people do not survive, and although it is sad for some people, the world self regulates its growth and prevents over population. When we, humans, come along and try to mess with the way of natural life it messes up the order. The act itself may be ethical but I think that messing with something so sacred as life itself and the creation, is unethical. The world is meant to function in certain ways and creating babies is something that we were never meant to do. If you arent meant to have a child, you won't have one. I believe that everything happens for a reason and while it may be harsh, this is not a field that scientists should enter in to.

Quick write #9

Jealousy is intolerable. It is a feeling that nobody wants because everyone understands that it makes you look bad. Whenever I feel jealous I try to make myself feel better because in the end it is better to not look jealous and shut that feeling down. Being jealous is so difficult and everything that the woman said is absolutely true. I had never realized the huge role that envy plays in our lives. It is everywhere and it will never go away. The social media currency is envy. This was so true and I went on to realize that the more likes a post has, the cooler that post is, which means that there are so many people that are jealous of you and your life, that they felt the need to double tap.

The Psychology of Evil

It's very interesting that when put in certain situations people begin to believe certain things. Psychology is such an interesting study about how situations change everything. This experiment at Stanford was so incredible that everyone knew that it was not true but people still began to take on certain roles and believe certain things. People often criticize Zimbardo for his experiment but I believe that it was so important and so crucial to our understanding of behavior. I would love to watch that movie and hear more about this.

Quick write #5

I think anger does scary things to people. Nothing the girl could have said could have made those girls beat her up to that extent. Violence is disgusting and there is way too much of it in this world. People need to learn to get over things and understand that not everything needs a reaction. This girl was obviously disturbed to the point that she had to post those things on social media. They never should have gone to those extents and violence is disgusting. I hate violence and everything that is happening right now in the world the last thing we need is violence involved with social media.

Anger: Quickwrite #4

I know my anger pretty well. I know what makes me mad and I also know when to hold myself back. Being angry is scary and for me it takes mostly ignorance. It takes someone being completely clueless to the situation to make me angry. I don't get very outwardly angry at friends or people I get more annoyed than anything. The fact of the matter is that I don't like getting in fights or being confrontational. I like to reasonably talk to people about their anger or my anger before it blows up in to anything more than just that, a feeling. Anger is just a feeling and I don't like that sometimes it can get in the way of friendships. The simple fact is that letting  an emotion get in the way of a relationship is crazy and I would hope that that would never happen between my friends and I.

I think that gluttony is never a good thing. As you can see from the video it is never good. It is crazy to me that people eat that much and continue to encourage eating this way. Laine brought up the point that someone who is starving should be able to commit gluttony. Which is true yet its difficult to decide ethically when any sin is okay.
On the website of the restaurant is says "help ugh fight anorexia" which is pretty deep. It is not something that is funny and this man is being pinned with the sin of greed and gluttony.
Although gluttony usually is never a good thing, greed sometimes can as it can get you your way. For example, the girl learned that by being greedy she always got her candy and she learned to use the restroom.

Semester 2: Quickwrite #1

I think that in our modern world, the 7 deadly sins still do apply yet I believe that some take on a different meaning now. For example, envy can be good in this world. Being envious of someone can be bad if it is manifested violently or in a bad way, yet being jealous of someone can also be a motivator. In our world a lot of people need motivation to become better and by being jealous of someone elses success, it may motivate one to work harder towards a goal. This is why this "deadly sin" may be necessary in some cases.
All of the sins can take on new meanings in certain cases and can be useful in one scenario yet bad in another. I don't think that it is fair to label something a "deadly sin" when in some situations they can be seen as something that is not necessarily bad. F
